What is a flatweave rug?

Traditionally handmade from wool or cotton, flat-woven rugs are definitively low profile with virtually no pile, woven through a simple process on a rug loom. Though flatweaves are thinner than most other rug styles, they are remarkably durable. Through the years many peoples and cultures have produced flatweave rugs for a wide range of uses, including floor coverings, bedding, wall tapestries, elaborate gifts, and ancient story documentation. Popular styles of flatweaves include Turkish flatweaves, vintage Scandinavian flatweaves, Moroccan kilims, and Indian dhurrie rugs.
